What insurance options are available?

If you’re like most GESB Super and West State Super members, your Death cover, Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD) cover and Salary Continuance Insurance (SCI) cover will be provided as:

  • Basic cover - which is the standard level of cover provided to eligible members. The amount of cover is explained below.
  • Voluntary Cover - which is cover which needs to be underwritten by our Insurer. You can increase your level of insurance cover above basic cover to suit your circumstances if you are eligible.

Death and TPD cover give you basic cover of up to $200,000, depending on your age. For SCI, you could be covered up to $4,200 per month determined by the number of hours per week that you worked when we received your first SG contribution.

The maximum insurance cover available is:

  • $10 million for Death
  • $3 million for TPD
  • The lesser of 85% of your income (calculated as 75% income plus up to 10% as a superannuation benefit) and $30,000 per month for up to two years for SCI

If you’re a Gold State Super member your insurance cover is based on the results of the medical examination you took when you joined the scheme and/or further medical information which you may need to provide to us in certain circumstances. You can qualify for one of three levels of cover: Standard, Limited or Minimum.

You can choose to have a medical examination to reassess your level of cover at any time, at your own expense. If you have Limited Cover, you can apply to have your cover reviewed if your medical condition(s) has improved. For information relating to the removal of limitations, call your Member Services Centre on 13 43 72.
