Insurance premium waiver for staff on unpaid parental leave

Changes to insurance for GESB Super and West State Super members are coming into effect as of 1 July 2025, including the introduction of premium waivers for members on unpaid parental leave.
Here’s a summary of what employers should know about the upcoming changes and some resources to help answer any staff questions you may receive.
Waiver of premiums for unpaid parental leave
We’ve negotiated premium waivers for eligible GESB Super and West State Super members on unpaid parental leave.
GESB members will need to apply to waive their insurance premiums while they’re on unpaid parental leave.
If your staff member asks for information on how to apply, please provide them with a Notification of unpaid parental leave – application for insurance premium waiver form.
Other changes
Other changes have been made that we see as positive for members overall, including:
- Changes to premiums, including a reduction in premium rates for certain insurances
- An option for members to elect to retain SCI cover in their account when no Superannuation Guarantee contributions are being received
- Waiver of premiums following the release of funds under severe financial hardship
- No longer reducing SCI benefits due to social security payments received
Resources for staff
Here are some resources you can provide to staff if they have questions or to help them learn more:
- Significant Event Notification for details of all the changes
- Member article for a summary of the relevant changes for members
- Insurance and your super brochure for more about how insurance works
