Update to Employer Online gender values

From Monday 24 August 2026, our Employer Online service can process ‘gender X’ values in super contribution files.

This update supports employers in creating inclusive workplaces and helps prevent delays when submitting contribution files.

Here’s your guide to what has changed and what this means for you and your employees.

How gender values were previously treated

Previously, Employer Online could only process male and female gender codes for employees, specifically:

  • Gender codes 1 (male) and 2 (female) in SuperStream Alternative File Format (SAFF) files for GESB Super and West State Super contributions
  • Gender codes M and F in electronic data exchange files for Gold State Super contributions

Any contribution files with values 0, 3, or X in the gender field resulted in an error message. These records needed to be manually amended before the file could be submitted.

Now, Employer Online can receive and process ‘gender X’ values.

Creating inclusive and safe workplaces

We have made this change to support employers in providing a non-binary gender identity option when recording their employee’s details.

This update is aligned with the WA Public Sector Commission guidelines for public sector agencies to create respectful, inclusive and safe workplaces for people of diverse sexualities and genders.

Changes for you and your employees

If an employee has updated their gender to ‘gender X’ in your agency’s records, you won’t need to manually correct this data when uploading contribution files to Employer Online.

This could help your agency process your contributions more efficiently and meet tighter deadlines under Payday Super legislation introduced on 1 July 2026.

When submitting a contribution file with a gender X value for a new employee, this information will also be stored in Employer Online and their GESB member record.

Please note, these values will not be reflected in our member records for existing members. If a member would like to change their gender to ‘gender X’ in our records, they can arrange this by contacting our Member Services Centre on 13 43 72 or through Live Chat.
