Making an insurance claim
We’re here to help when you need to make an insurance claim. Our insurance claim consultants can take you through the process and support you step by step.
It’s easier to make a claim if you gather the right information for our Insurer, AIA Australia. Below we outline the claims process and the documents, forms and information you might need.
Claim types
We offer four types of insurance through GESB Super and West State Super and the claims process differs depending on the type. If your claim is accepted, you may be required to satisfy a waiting period, provide ongoing medical evidence and/or be entitled to other super benefit payments.
We'll take you through the relevant steps to have your insured amount paid to you, including any applicable waiting periods. For most insurance types, your amount insured will be paid into your super account or nominated bank account, less any applicable fees and taxes.
SCI provides a monthly payment of up to 75% of your pre-disability income for up to two years if you can't work due to sickness or injury.
To lodge your SCI claim, you’ll need to submit medical certification. When you call us, our Insurance Claims Consultants will provide details of the information required.
If your SCI claim is approved, payments will be made to your nominated bank account after you have served the relevant waiting period.
Ongoing evidence for temporary disability
For payments to continue, you need to provide monthly ‘progress reports’ which may require periodical medical evidence that you are still unable to work. The Insurer, AIA, will request this from you directly, for you to have completed by your health care provider.
You will also need to advise AIA if you return to work, even in a reduced capacity, as this will affect your benefit payments.
Superannuation Top-Up benefit
You may be entitled to a Superannuation Top-Up benefit payment, if the amount you’re insured for is more than 75% of your pre-disability income. This will be paid to your super account and can be accessed when you meet a condition of release.
Call us to find out if you’re eligible or read our Insurance and your super brochure for more information.
Assistance getting back to work
AIA run rehabilitation programs to help you improve your physical, mental and financial wellbeing and ultimately help you get back to work in whatever capacity you can.
TPD insurance provides a one-off lump-sum payment if you are totally and permanently disabled and can't work due to that condition.
To lodge your TPD claim, you’ll need to submit medical certification. When you call us, our Insurance Claims Consultants will provide details of the information required.
If your TPD claim is approved, the insured amount is paid into your superannuation account after you’ve served the appropriate waiting period. Your benefit can be accessed when you meet a condition of release.
Early access to your super – claiming a disability or terminal illness benefit
If your doctors advise that you are unlikely to ever engage in gainful employment again for which you are reasonably qualified by education, training or experience, you may be able to lodge a claim to access your super early as a disability.
You may also be able to access your super early if you are diagnosed with a terminal illness.
Partial disablement (West State Super members)
If you’re a West State Super member and you don’t meet the criteria for total and permanent disablement, you may still be eligible for a partial and permanent disablement benefit.

A Terminal Illness benefit is included in Death cover and provides a one-off lump-sum payment if you are terminally ill and have less than 24 months to live, regardless of any treatment undertaken.
To apply for a Terminal Illness benefit, you’ll need to submit medical evidence and specific forms. When you call us, our Insurance Claims Consultants will provide details of the information and forms required.
If your claim is approved, the insured amount is paid to your superannuation account. You can submit a Benefit access form to access it, after which it will be paid into a nominated bank account. This can take up to 10 working days after your form is received.
Please note that your Death insurance policy will be closed after the Terminal Illness benefit is paid.
Death insurance provides a one-off lump sum payment in the event of your death.
If you have a valid binding death nomination, your Death benefit will be paid to your beneficiaries named. If you do not have a valid binding death nomination, your Death benefit will be paid to your estate according to your will (if you have one), or to legislation.
Once we have been notified of your death, we will send a letter to your beneficiary or legal personal representative that explains the documentation needed for the claim. We will also advise the amount to be paid and explain the claim process.
Processing a death benefit payment can be quite lengthy, depending on the circumstances and if you have a valid binding death nomination in place. To learn more, read What happens to my super when I pass away?
Don't have insurance or need to access your super?
If you don’t have insurance - or even if you do - you may be able to access your super early if you qualify under special circumstances. These include compassionate grounds or severe financial hardship, total and permanent disablement or terminal illness.
How long does the claims process take?
Depending on the type of claim and/or the circumstances involved, the below are general guidelines for how long it might take from claim lodgement to final decision:
- SCI claims can take up to two months
- TPD claims can take up to six months
- Terminal illness claims can be prioritised however timeframes will vary - we aim for less than 15 days
- Death claim timeframes depend on whether you have a binding death nomination in place or a will
Every claim is unique and we'll work with you so that you know the status of your claim and what the next steps are.
Other things to note:
- Once you've submitted your claim, AIA will contact you within five working days to let you know the next steps
- Our Insurance Claim Consultants will contact you to keep you informed of the progress of your claim at least once every 20 working days
- Following AIA's preliminary decision, if you provide further evidence and AIA declines your claim, GESB will review the decision and either challenge it or agree with the Insurer
