Changes improve benefit access for Gold State Super members

State super regulations have changed to enable Gold State Super members who are still working in the WA public sector at least 10 hours a week to access their benefit from age 65.

This exciting change has been made to align Gold State Super with the wider super industry and will give you more flexibility in accessing your benefit while still working in the public sector.

We will contact Gold State Super members directly with further details in the coming weeks, including how the changes will apply.

Meet John, Jane, Emily and Felix

In the meantime, here are some examples of how the changes might work if you’re a contributing member or deferred account holder.

Note these examples are for illustrative purposes only.

John, 66
Contributing Gold State Super member

  • Works for the Department of Health

John works full time and is contributing to his Gold State Super. He wishes to access some of this super as an allocated pension.

The changes mean John will be able to transfer part of his Gold State Super benefit to GESB’s Retirement Income account, while continuing to contribute to his Gold State Super account

Jane, 67
West State Super and Gold State Super deferred member

  • Works for the Department of Education

Jane works 15 hours per week and  has a West State Super account and a Gold State Super deferred account. She was previously only able to draw on her West State Super account and could not access her Gold State Super deferred account while she was still working for the public sector.

The changes mean Jane will be able to access her Gold State Super deferred account either partially or in full. If she accesses part of her benefit, she must leave at least $1,000 in her account to keep it open.

Felix, 67
GESB Super and Gold State Super deferred member

  • Works for the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport

Felix works 7.5 hours per week and has a GESB Super account and a Gold State Super deferred account.

There is no change for Felix, he can still access his Gold State Super deferred benefit from age 55.

As a Gold State Super deferred member working in the WA public sector for less than 10 hours a week, partial access is not available for Felix. He must access all of his benefit, and his account will be closed and cannot be reopened.

Emily, 65
Gold State Super deferred member

  • Left the public sector

Emily used to work for the Department of Communities, but she left the public sector 12 years ago. As such, she has a Gold State Super deferred account.

There is no change for Emily, she can still access her benefit from age 55.

As a Gold State Super deferred member who is not working for the public sector, partial access is not available for Emily. She must access all of her benefit, and her account will be closed and cannot be reopened.
