GESB proud to support diverse WA communities

At GESB, we’re dedicated to representing the interests of all our members and making sure everyone is treated fairly and equally. This extends to fostering a safe, supportive, and ethical culture in our workplace - one that respects and celebrates difference, and promotes a fair work environment where all employees are given equal opportunity.

To support this, we recently joined in on Pride WA’s PrideFEST celebrations throughout the month of November, as part of an annual calendar of activities aimed at raising awareness of multiculturalism and diversity.

Diversity in our workplace

We know all Western Australians have the right to access services and achieve equitable outcomes.

We’ve established a workplace inclusion network (WIN) to make sure diversity and inclusion is considered in our workforce plans, including our:

  • Multicultural access plan, which aims to support a culture that embraces multicultural access and inclusion, where we engage and communicate effectively with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) people
  • Workforce and diversity plan, which builds on current workforce planning, recruitment and diversity initiatives to generate awareness of the benefits of diversity in the workplace
  • Disability access and inclusion plan, which ensures people with disability have the same opportunity as other people to access our services and information

The WIN is made up of employees with a diverse range of backgrounds and skillsets, including from across the business and from different generations, disabilities, cultures, genders and sexualities to reflect our diverse membership and communities across WA.

One of the ways the WIN aims to promote awareness of diversity and inclusion matters is by promoting and encouraging staff participation and raising awareness of different cultures throughout the year.

Celebrating WA Pride

Our most recent internal activity celebrated LGBTQ+ peoples throughout the month of November to align with Pride WA’s annual PrideFEST festival.

GESB’s People and Business Services team shared event details for PrideFEST 2022 and fascinating cultural facts about LGBTQ+ communities in WA and around the world, including the origin and meaning of different LGBTQ+ flags. Favourite movies, books, and music celebrating LGBTQ themes were also suggested, and a trivia quiz was shared.

As part of the awareness campaign, staff were encouraged to dress in bright colours to celebrate and promote our LGBTQ+ community.

Our People and Business Services Manager, Gus Dhillon, said that staff support for the campaign – and our WIN initiatives in general – is overwhelming.

“We have a great team across the business who live by GESB’s values,” Gus said. “It sounds cliché, but everyone really does work towards the shared goal of helping our members – and to do that, we celebrate and embrace differences and achieve together.”
