We’ve updated our insurance terms and conditions from 1 July

We recently updated the terms and conditions of our Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD) and Salary Continuance Insurance (SCI) cover for GESB Super and West State Super members.

The new terms and conditions applied from 1 July 2018, and are relevant to all TPD and SCI claims where the Incident Date or Date of Disability is on or after 1 July 2018.

These changes have been designed to enhance the insurance cover we offer our members - but our premium rates haven’t changed.

We’ve explained the new terms and conditions and how they apply to your cover below.

Here’s a summary of the changes to your TPD and SCI cover

You can find more details in our Insurance and your super brochure. For full terms and conditions, please contact us on 13 43 72 for a copy of the relevant insurance policies.

We’ve italicised the words below that have a special meaning in the insurance policies. To find out what these terms mean, please see the Glossary on page 27 of our Insurance and your super brochure.

  1. SCI and TPD cover: extended the definition of Minimum FTE

For claims where the Incident Date or Date of Disability is on or after 1 July 2018, Minimum Full-Time Employment (FTE) now means:

SCI and TPD cover: extended the definition of Minimum FTE

    Term

    Explanation

    Minimum Full-Time Employment (FTE)

At least 0.4 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) and working a minimum of thirteen (13) hours per week for the Employer

This means if you’re working at least 40% of the Full-Time Equivalent (FTE), you’re eligible for the standard definitions of TPD and SCI, as long as you’re working a minimum of 13 hours a week for your employer, averaged over the 13 weeks immediately before the Incident Date. Previously, you needed to be working a minimum of 15 hours per week to be eligible for the standard definitions.

For more information, please see our Insurance and your super brochure and refer to pages 13-14 for the TPD definitions, and pages 21-23 for the SCI definitions.

  2. TPD cover: amended the continuation of cover clause

When you cease all paid employment, your TPD cover automatically continues, subject to the terms of the policy.

From 1 July 2018, the date at which the TPD definition changes after you cease paid employment has been delayed to up to one year, where evidence supports the cessation of employment was due to an illness or injury related to the claimed condition.

Any claim made on your TPD cover will be assessed against the relevant TPD definition.

For more information, please see the ‘Death and Total and Permanent Disablement insurance’ section on page 12 of our Insurance and your super brochure.

  3. SCI cover: expanded the definition of At Work

To be fully covered for SCI, you need to be At Work on the day your cover starts.

From 1 July 2018,  At Work now means:

SCI cover: expanded the definition of At Work

Term

Explanation

At Work

Permanent Employees, Contractors and Sessional Employees: you are actively performing or capable of performing (if currently unemployed) all the duties of your usual occupation with the Participating Employer and are not in receipt of, or entitled to claim, any income support benefits from any source including (but not limited to) workers’ compensation benefits, statutory transport accident benefits and disability income benefits.

Previously, you needed to be actively performing all the duties of your usual occupation to meet the At Work requirement. It didn’t matter whether or not you were capable of performing these duties.

For more information, please see the ‘Limitations on basic cover’ section on page 5 of our Insurance and your super brochure.
